Reminder – Extended Tax Deadline Hits July 15

July 01, 2020

For some, the onset of COVID-19 brought about a much-needed reprieve from the traditional Spring tax deadlines. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) extended the deadline for all taxpayers to July 15, 2020. Anyone, including Americans who live and work abroad, nonresident aliens, and foreign entities with a U.S. filing and payment requirement, have until July 15 to file their 2019 federal income tax return and pay any tax due.1

  • Extra Time to Pay: You can still request a filing extension to push your due date to October 15, 2020 by either filing Form 4868 or submitting an electronic payment and selecting Form 4868. This latter option will delay your payment, but you’re still required to file by the July 15 deadline.
  • Extensions for Businesses: Businesses that require extra time to file returns must file the Form 7004 Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File.
  • Extensions for Military: Members of the military and their spouses may qualify for an additional extension of 180 days to file and pay. Determination for this qualification is lengthy and specifics can be found on the IRS website.
  • State Specific Deadlines: Most state income tax agencies have provided some sort of tax extension and payment relief due to the pandemic for the 2020 tax filing season. Refer to H&R Block’s additional state tax filing extension chart to understand what your state is allowing.

Regardless of any additional time you may need, in most cases the deadline to file remains July 15.  For more clarification and forms, visit IRS.gov/coronavirus. The deadline is less than a month away so call us and we can help.
